Sexual Orientation in the Military Service

A friend of mine found a very interesting article on wikipedia about sexual orientation in military service. It listed numerous countries who allow gays/lesbians/bisexuals/transexuals in the military service including (but not limited to) Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finaland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, The Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and Uruguay.

Guess who has "other policies"? Yep, the United States. According to the article, it says that "The United States prohibits LGBT service members from serving openly under the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. Service members who remain closeted are allowed to serve, but investigation into a member's sexuality without suspicion is prohibited."

I feel like I need to write about this just to get it out there. I'm just sick and tired of the place that I call home having a homophobic cloud over it most of the time. I'm hoping that things change soon. If not, I'm moving to Denmark (which I wouldn't mind at all actually...)

In case anyone is interested, here's the full article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_orientation_and_military_service#Countries_that_allow_homosexuals_to_serve_in_the_military

the u.s. government- self proclaimed 'greatest country' - promotes hate and prejudice and fear and ignorance- by continuing to associate sexual orientation to a person's ability or inability to perform duties/tasks/jobs...all of those countries listed that have non-discrimating policies- their armies are not falling apart- straight men aren't getting raped in the shower. performance isn't affected....the u.s.; by promoting fear and hiding- opens up their gay service people to be targets of manipulation and black mail_ because if their secret gets out then their career is over with- the u.s. risks more by encouraging it's service people to lie and keep secrets- because it makes the person willing to do anything to keep the secret

(A Girl Like Me/ Gwen Araujo)- a movie airing on lifetime movie network right now- 4 boys killed a trans-gendered girl because they thought she was a 'real' girl- and by letting her/him suck their cocks- it made them feel like fags- so they killed her/him to assert their masculinity and take their 'manliness' and 'heterosexuality' back...none of them were charged with hate-crimes_ even though the body was found, they were found guilty and evidence and witnesses proved their guilt. ed 'gwen' was 17 years old.-----these are the kinds of things that happen in the u.s. because of their antiquated, gov't promoted, rooted in right-wing religious persecution of anything that is not them. we raise generation after generation of children that think that since the government wants it to stay hidden and the religions want it persecuted- that anything other than heterosexuality is wrong and to be feared- attacked and destroyed.

i'm with you on the denmark train. marijuane cafes and guiltless sex- toot-toot_ all aboard_

thank you for posting and sharing your opinion- i hope others see it and comment one way or the other- it's all the hiding and pretending it doesn't exist that is the root of the problem - or maybe a government policy that promotes hiding and lying? thanks for sharing the unbiased information/link_ you get extra points for promoting equality and education and bringing awareness to others. Thanks
